Nsefu is considered by many to be the best game viewing terrain in the South Luangwa Valley. This makes Nsefu and Tena Tena Camps very popular and great game experiences. Robin Pope runs a low key but impressive operation in the valley. Fly camping is available from Nsefu for those who need to get even more remote.
The only drawback is that we feel the 1950s feel of the camp can feel a bit dated rather than reminiscent. Open annually late May through October.
On a sweeping bend of the river, 12 km north of Tena Tena, lies Nsefu Camp. Nsefu was the first photographic safari camp in Zambia and dates back to the early 50s.
The view of the river is superb and includes a terraced area where game grazes during the day. The bar, tucked beside a huge extinct termite mound, overlooks a waterhole that is very productive for game, especially leopard viewing at night.
The original rondavels have been extended, with a spacious bathroom added. Each room has a clear view of the river through large windows and from the new wooden verandah.
The camp lies in the heart of the undeveloped Nsefu sector and offers charm and total comfort in remoteness and seclusion. Nsefu is located in the Luangwa Valley, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, and is one of the last unspoiled wilderness areas. It covers an area of over 9000 sq km through which the meandering Luangwa River runs. The oxbow lagoons, woodland, and plains of the valley host huge concentrations of game - including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo - and over 400 species of birds. You are sure to enjoy several days here on guided walks and day and night game drives.
