We love the fabulous cuisine and laid-back style at Matemwe Lodge! From your private balcony, you can watch Dhows sailing past, locals fishing and see the nearby Mnemba Atoll…perfect for a snorkeling or diving excursion.
Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow, coral-fringed lagoon on the quiet northeastern coast of Zanzibar Island, Matemwe Lodge’s blissful location and famously relaxed atmosphere make it the ideal place to unwind. Whether you take a break in a hammock or dive the depths of the Indian Ocean, Matemwe Lodge provides an unbeatable island escape.
Built using local materials and surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, each of the 12 chalets at Matemwe Lodge has a private veranda with hammock and sofa, where you can relax and take in the spectacular views of the sparkling Indian Ocean. Six triple-bed chalets are available, and there are two that have a private plunge pool. The large bathrooms have a deep bathtub and walk-in shower, and beds are all enclosed by mosquito nets.
Seafood is the specialty of the house, the catch of the day, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. The kitchen has been praised for its high quality and diversity in combining local cuisine with that of other nations.
Recreation in this area is one of leisure and tranquility. You are offered sailing in a local Ngalawa, and snorkeling or diving at the unique and colorful Mnemba reef. For the lucky ones, whales, dolphins or sea turtles might be spotted. Kayaks and bicycles are available as well.
