If you have time to push a little further North, Sarara will not disappoint. This stunning wilderness area is enough to take your breath away but it is the people of this land who steal your heart. We think the visit to Retiti Elephant Sanctuary will be one of your trip highlights!
Sarara is located in northern Kenyan on the edge of the Mathews Mountain Range. This is a beautiful and dramatic 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness. The owners and people of this area are the Samburu. Sarara means 'meeting place'. This property is special for the remote and dramatic landscape, but it is really about the people. Visitors have a rare opportunity to spend time with the local Samburu who still live in their age-old traditional lifestyle and are barely touched by the modern world. Opportunities range from a visit to the century-old ritual of the singing wells to visiting a manyatta (traditional homestead) in the afternoon as the animals come in for the night.
The secluded camp consists of only 6 luxurious double tents spread out along the hillside with open air bathrooms to make the most of the exceptional vistas and fully benefit from the hot climate. The camp also has a two-bedroom family house built in the same style as the main lodge. The central area includes an amazing infinity pool built into the natural rock as well as a hide. The team of resident chefs lovingly create delicious, home-cooked meals which can be enjoyed in the bush or in the comfort of the camp’s surroundings.
In addition to cultural opportunities, there are lots of animals around to explore on foot, camel or by vehicle-based drive. You can visit the stables to feed the orphan animals like zebra, giraffe and gerenuk, hike a beautiful rock for a picnic breakfast, or visit the daily feeding at the Retiti Elephant Orphanage.
